The Montreal Canadiens, staring down the face of a rebuild, have elected to trade top player Max Pacioretty to the Vegas Golden Knights.
They do so in order to acquire Tomas Tatar, prospect Nick Suzuki and a 2019 second-round pick.
Montreal retained 10% of Max Pacioretty’s contract in the deal with Vegas. The Golden Knights retained 9.34% on Tomas Tatar — giving the #habs a $500,000 AAV savings for the two seasons beyond this coming one.
Pacioretty had 17 goals in 64 games last year for Montreal and has played his entire career North of the Border.
He spoke highly of Vegas on a trip there in February when the Habs played the Knights. Vegas is coming off a season that saw it go to the Stanley Cup Finals.
The two sides are working on a contract extension.
