New Sox OF Verdugo May Miss Start of Season

Newly-acquired Boston Red Sox OF Alex Verdugo may miss the beginning the season with back issues, per a report from Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.

This is consistent with what Tim Cates of AM 570 in Los Angeles told us on ‘The Huddle’ that day after the trade was first reported. He said that Verdugo hadn’t even begun baseball activities as of 1.5 weeks before our conversation.

New Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo (back) may be sideline at the start of the season. The possibility was known in the trade, and added to Red Sox interest in Kevin Pillar via @BostonGlobe

From the report:

“Verdugo told in December that he had a “goal” of being ready for Opening Day after last year’s injuries, but acknowledged that wasn’t a certainty.

“I think anybody that’s had something wrong with your back would understand,” Verdugo told the website. “I’m going in the right direction. My goal is to be starting Opening Day. We’ll just see how the days and weeks go and how I recover.”

We’ll have more on ‘The Huddle’ from 3-6 PM.
