The Houston Rockets have made a blockbuster deal, acquiring former MVP Russell Westbrook in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
In exchange, the Thunder acquire Chris Paul and multiple first-round draft picks.
Westbrook became expendable after the Thunder traded Paul George to the Clippers. They’ve acquired eight first-round picks via trades this offseason.
I left out Thunder’s Jerami Grant deal with Denver: OKC has acquired EIGHT first-round picks since draft night: 2020: Denver (1-10), 2021: Miami; 2022: LAC; 2023: Miami (1-14), 2024: LAC; 2024: Houston (1-14); 2026: LAC; 2026: Houston (1-4).
The trade reunites Westbrook with former teammate James Harden and makes the Rockets legitimate contenders again in the Western Conference.
Harden and Westbrook formerly played together in Oklahoma City before Harden ended up moving onto Houston. where he’s also been an MVP and helped the Rockets get deep into the playoffs, but never to the NBA Finals.
Westbrook averaged 22.9 points per game last year. As for Paul, he could be flipped again, with the Miami Heat being suitors.
